Thanks so much Clayton for sharing your story, I was so blown away! And to my wife for finding this article. Wow!

Your experience is so very much like my own both growing up as a child when Dad would take me and my brother hunting and my hunting experiences with my son.

It never mattered to Dad whether we bagged a deer or not, the experience was about life and love. He taught many of the same things you mentioned and we had the good fortune of hunting on the same land that Dad grew up on, ironically where his dad taught many of the same lessons.

This was our first Thanksgiving without Dad (he passed away in January 09) and there have been a lot of firsts this year thus far. Almost everytime we go out something seen or heard brings back precious memories. All I can do as a daddy is pass it on. Thanks again...

Thanks Clayton- I'm at my Parent's home right now for Thanksgiving and this is a great story and inspiration for me to thank my Dad when he gets up later this morning for a similar experience.
My Dad took me sailing and to many racing events along the intracoastal waterway with him when I was young. He taught me to read the wind on the water, how to plan for and jockey for a good start when the airhorn sounded, navigate the tides when racing, balance on the edge of the hull to get just the right slice thru the water, and how to keep from capsizing no matter how hard the gusts were.
Dad can't sail anymore due to his health, but I learned some good life lessons from our time together. Think I'll reminesce about this today when we are having breakfast looking out over the Beaufort river!

What a wonderful story and lesson. My husband nor my dad were hunters but there is a lesson here for us no matter what we do. Our children want to be a part of it and it is important to take them along and teach them important lessons as we go. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
